Haze hangs over Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR : Visibility has been poor in both Peninsular and East Malaysia with Kuala Lumpur landmarks like the Petronas Twin Towers barely visible from more than 3 kilometres. South-west winds are carrying pollutants from Sumatra where the number of hotspots from fires is on the rise.

Malaysian authorities are asking their neighbouring Indonesian counterparts to undertake preventive measures although Indonesia is not a signatory to the Asean Transboundary Haze Agreement.

Rosnani Ibrahim, Director General, Department of Environment, Malaysia, said: "We have contacted our counterparts in Indonesia, informing them the slight haze situation in peninsular Malaysia...hopefully they will take preventative actions."

Malaysian authorities are also doing their bit back home by controlling open burning, and ensuring industry and vehicle emissions are within permissible levels.

Mr Rosnani said: "We have a fairly sizeable peat areas in this country. We are monitoring very closely to prevent outbreaks because if a peat caught fire it would take quite a while to put out the fire."

For now it is business as usual although the authorities do not rule out temporarily closing schools if the situation gets worse over the next few days.-CNA
